Energy Viewpoints

We have spent almost two weeks learning about energy resources in class.  Using your background knowledge of these resources please write a comment answering the following question.

Imagine you live in an area that has access to all nine types of energy studied in class.  If you were in charge of choosing the energy resource used by a city in the area, which energy resource would you select?  Please explain why.  In your explanation of why, include two specific pieces of evidence to support your selection and one specific piece of evidence that is an admission of a negative for this type of energy.

  1. I would choose hydropower for many great reasons. First, it is extremely eco-friendly, so it wouldn't hurt wildlife around it. Also, it is completely safe. It wouldn't affect very much the farmers that use the water down stream, so it won't affect their crops. There is a downside to hydropower though, is when it is being built, it can be extremely loud. This might affect the surrounding wildlife and residents. Although hydropower has some downsides, it is overall a really good source of energy.

  2. I would pick solar because it's renewable and would help Blakeville. First it's renewable because it stores in the solar panel if there is a cloudy day. Second it would help Blakeville because it will always be there unless of a black hole. But the bad thing is that if it's always cloudy and you always have the lights on then it will run out and you won't have any power.

  3. If I was in charge of selecting an energy resource for my city, I would select the city to use solar power. First, solar power is very efficient. You only use the sun, which will never run out, well, at least for a while. Next, the solar cells (if you have enough) can send energy you don’t need to your energy provider. The energy provider can send you money for your energy. Instead of paying them, they pay you, but now, the energy providers want to change the amount of money they send you. Also, the energy cells are expensive. But, only after a few months or years of use, they pay themselves off, with all the money saved. Last, the solar cells don’t have to be replaced every couple of years. The solar cells do cost a little bit of money, but you can use them until you don’t want them anymore. If I ran a city, I would choose solar as the power source for those reasons.

    Best Regards,
    Brady R.

  4. If I lived in an area where I had access to all nine energy types I would choose hydro power. I wouldn't just choose hydro power because its my resource, but because its very non polluting. And it is very reliable, and easy to get. A bad thing about my resource is that it can hurt marine life and it is expensive. The things we can do to fix these problems is that marine life can be put in a veterinarian facility. We can use taxes or fundraisers to get the money. That is why we need to use hydropower5 the most.

  5. If I were living in an area where there was access to every single resource, I would definitely choose the resource hydro power. I would choose this resource for a couple reasons. First of all, I would choose this resource because it is a reliable resource. Unlike solar power or wind power, Hydro power does not rely on something that is not always there. Water is very abundant and will be able to power are homes in any weather or setting. Second, I would choose this resource because of the fact that it is renewable. This means that this resource is one that we can reuse for energy. Water is very easy to turn into power, and it is also easy to use over again. These are two reasons that hydro power is the best resource.

  6. If I had to pick, I would choose solar. I would choose solar because there is no pollution that comes with it. It is true that solar panels are very expensive, but they are so much better for the Earth than other non-renewable fuels. Also, they are reliable. As long as the sun shines down on the Earth, there will be solar power. And for those rainy days, solar panels store energy too. So, these are my reasons for picking solar power.

  7. If I lived in an area that has access to all nine types of energy, I would use geothermal energy with no second thought. Geothermal energy for me will be the best ever in my opinion. First, geothermal energy doesn't cause as much pollution as fossil fuels. Fossil fuels cause pollution in the process of turning the raw materials into energy and also transferring the raw materials to the power plant site. Geothermal energy causes only a little pollution and that's when they transport the power plant materials used to build the power plant. Next, the energy will last as long as the power plant exists. But, bringing the materials to the site causes some pollution.

  8. If I would choose a energy recourse for a town I would pick petroleum. Petroleum can power the most thing’s. But petroleum is a non renewable energy source. Petroleum is expensive but it’s really useful, it is useful because petroleum is one of the main resources that cars and machines use. I also think petroleum is a good resource for a town because there is around 11 million kegs of petroleum pumped out of the ground into a town a year, that is a lot of petroleum that a town could use. Most towns have airports and airplanes take petrolium. It will be easier to use petroleum because most thing’s we have and use every day have to have petroleum to work right.

  9. If I were in charge of choosing an energy source for an area that had access to all nine types of energy, I would choose hydropower. With water that is always running, hydropower provides constant energy. This is a good thing because it means that you would never have to worry about storing energy, or running out of it. Another reason that I would choose hydropower is because it is very eco friendly. Since the energy is created by water passing through turbines, it does not pollute the air very much. This is because it is all mechanical, and it does not require any type of engine. One of the big downsides to hydropower is how it needs a lot of supervision. People are needed to supervise the dams and the turbines, so that if something were to go wrong, they would be there to fix it. The upside to this, though, is that it is a high paying job, so many people would be interested in doing it. Overall, I would choose hydropower over all of the other choices, because of the reasons above.

  10. If I were to pick a resource for this city I would choose biomass which is a renewable resource. It is very easy to get the raw materials because it can be animal waste or crops. Due to the fact that it uses waste, it helps clean up the city and is a good way to remove trash and animal waste. Another reason why I would chose it is because there is no digging, mining or anything that would harm the environment or the animals and plants. After collected all you have to do is burn it to create steam to spin a turbine. One of the downsides is that farmers sometimes need to supply crops as fuel. To solve this the farmers could be reimbursed from the profits of the energy company. Due to the many pros and few cons, I would chose biomass to supply a city with power.

  11. If I had to chose a energy resource, it would be hydro power. The reasons I would pick hydro power because If I had to chose a energy resource, it would be hydro power. The reasons I would pick hydro power because it is very environmental and it doesn’t affect the farmers. The one disadvantage is that it costs a lot of money to make.

  12. The best type of energy is hydropower, because of these three reasons. Hydropower is safe for the environment, because you don't have to burn anything. It's an easy resource to find, and it's even easier to convert into energy. Even though it'll be noisy and expensive while you're building the power plant, it'll be as close to quiet as you can get once it's up and running. And you can make hydropower at your own house, with the right tools. It's renewable too!
Hydropower is the best energy source to use, with all of it's positive and easy characteristics.

  13. Hydro power is definitely the energy resource that is non polluting and constantly runs. Hydro power never runs out. It is a renewable energy source and keeps on running. Its kinetic energy is the energy we get from it. It is always running so it always has that kinetic energy. If the town uses it we will always have energy and even at night. Hydropower also does not pollute the area when it is running and it is eco friendly. Hydropower does not pollute and it is not loud. This will make it so it does not hurt or disturb marine life. I understand that this will cost a lot of money, but it will be a good energy source that is always alive. We don’t need to do any work but set it up and help it keep running. It doesn't involve any type of mining. Hydro power will definitely be a resource that helps the town every time and helps not disturb marine life when running.

  14. If I could choose any of the nine energy sources to power a town, I would choose hydropower. I would choose this energy source because it causes absolutely no pollution once the plant is built. Even though the machines needed to build the hydropower plant cause pollution, hydropower will cause far less pollution than most other energy sources in the long run. Another reason I would choose hydropower is because it is a renewable resource so we can’t use it up. This is good because water does not run out so our town could use hydropower as long as there are people to use it. All energy sources have disadvantages and one of hydropower’s is that it can cause harm to animal life in the water because water flow, water level, and shelter would be changed.

  15. If I could choose an energy resource to use in the city, I would choose Biomass/Biofuel. First off, biomass is healthy for the environment and for the atmosphere. Biomass is a renewable resource which means that the energy will never be wasted and the energy will last forever. Garbage, plants, humans, and animals all create biomass energy. Biomass energy is used to heat homes, produce electricity, make cars run/move, and much more! A great thing about biomass energy is it comes in two different forms; liquid and gas! One disadvantage for biomass is that it costs more than other energy resources. Even if you do spend a little bit more money on biomass, this energy resource will come in handy when it comes to producing heat and electricity.

  16. If I lived in a place that had access to all types of energy, I would choose coal as my main energy source. For one thing, it is cheap. For only $53.06 per short ton, coal is one of the cheapest energy resources around. Another reason is that coal is reliable. People have been using it for years and years which proves that it works well. On the downside, burning coal can cause a lot of pollution. Now people are working on decreasing the amount of pollution it can cause. Coal has been improving a lot, causing me to choose it for my main energy resource.

  17. Although there are many fabulous energy sources that we could use, and they would all work well, if I had to chose just one, I would choose hydropower. First, I would choose hydropower because it doesn't cause pollution. It doesn't cause pollution because it is basically just water spinning a wheel to make electricity. Another reason why I would choose hydropower is because it is renewable. Hydropower is a renewable energy resource because it’s just using water to create electricity, and since water is renewable, hydropower is renewable. Although there are pros to using hydropower, sadly there are some cons as well. One con to using hydropower is that it can be very expensive. Buying and installing the equipment to use hydropower is the most expensive part. Even though hydropower can be expensive, so can other energy resources, so don’t turn it down just because of the price.

  18. I think that hydro-power is the best solution. The only bad sides to this resource is that it costs a lot. There are however, many good things. For example, this energy will work until no water exists. This energy is also non pollutant. This means that with this energy source, we wouldn't harm the environment. This energy is also very safe. In Blakeville, we have access to lots of rivers. We could make a few plants around the lakes and have lots of energy to supply Blakeville. Therefore, I think that hydro-power is the best solution because it doesn't pollute, it works for a long period of time, and it is also very safe.

  19. Out of all the nine energy resources, I would choose hydropower as the main energy resource for my town. The first reason I would choose hydropower is because it has many uses. It can be used to heat homes, give power to offices, homes, and factories, and much, much more. Another reason I would choose hydropower is because it is reliable. Water doesn’t stop flowing, and as long as water flows the hydropower plant can keep converting the power from the water to energy. Hydropower is also eco friendly. The power plants give off no pollution, which makes hydropower clean and safe for the environment. Although hydropower plants are very expensive to build, hydropower is a clean, efficient, and a powerful energy resource. Hydropower is obviously the perfect energy resource for my town!

  20. I would choose Hydropower because it is a great resource for many reasons. First, it is a very eco-friendly way to get energy. Second, it can't harm any of the natural wildlife or creatures in the environment so Blakeville’s wildlife population would continue to grow. Third, Hydropower creates no pollution unlike some of Blakeville’s other energy resource options. 4th it is not a fossil fuel, so it does not need to be mined or taken from the Earth, this is good because it keeps Blakeville’s environment in better shape than it would be when using some other energy resources. Overall, Blakeville should use Hydropower because it is eco-friendly, not a fossil fuel, and causes absolutely no pollution!

  21. After learning about all the different types of energy sources, I think that the most effective source would be solar power. This source is renewable, so it can be used again and again. This would make solar power an effective energy source because there is an unlimited amount of it, unlike petroleum and other types of non-renewable energy sources. Solar panels require very little maintenance, so they are easier to work with than other energy producers. They are also very quiet when producing energy, unlike windmills. Solar power is also becoming more affordable. There are solar panels everywhere, even on houses in my neighborhood. One of the main disadvantages to solar energy is that it is dependent upon the sun, which means it cannot produce energy in the nighttime. Solar energy is definitely, in my opinion, the best energy source to use, especially here in Colorado.

  22. If I could choose any energy recourse to use in my town I would chose solar power. I have solar panels and they work great!

Solar energy is an eco-friendly safe recourse. The only pollution that may be caused is pollution from installing the panels. It only uses and stores energy from the sun so it does not cause any damage to the earth. On rainy days the extra energy you have stored can power your house. It is safe because the are just panels installed in the ground or on your roof.

It is very expensive though. You can use taxes, actions, fundraisers, etc. to raise the money though! That is why I think people should use solar energy.

  23. If I could power a city, I would power it with solar power. Solar power doesn't pollute the air unless you consider the making of the panels and the transportation of the panels to there final destination. They also produce a big amount of electricity because the sun has a lot of energy in it. Solar panels also store electricity so at night, when the sun doesn't shine, the electricity doesn't run out. However, if the sun doesn't shine for a few days because of bad weather, the panels won't be able to produce electricity. Other than that , I think solar energy would be the best energy resource to power a city.

  24. If I had to choose an energy source for my town I’d choose coal. I know what you're thinking “coal is a non-renewable resource and it also pollutes” well I know, but it’s cheap and it has the biggest veritey of energy. To conclude, coal is the best energy resource.

  25. If I had to pick an energy source, I would pick oil. When you pull up to a gas station, you go there to put gas in your car. That gas is coming from oil. You can not power a car with water or wind. Oil has so many uses that other energy sources to not. Oil is very powerful and useful. So many people use oil today. It is one of the worlds top energy sources today. When you turn on a light, turn on your heating, or get in your car, you are using oil. You are using the energy source that gets you the most power. Oil does cause pollution, but we can fix that as well. All you have to do is use your car a little less and make sure you turn off your lights when you do not need them. Also, you can only use your heater in really cold weather. That is all we have to do to have less pollution. Oil is the best resource for energy out there. You can use oil for anything you need to use it for. If I where in charge of picking an energy source, I would choose oil.

  26. I think that I would choose geothermal energy because it is forever running energy flow. A few more reasons I would decide to choose geothermal energy is because it provides clean energy for the area. Even though it wouldn’t work as well if it was in the desert because it needs heated water from the earth’s core. It would work in the ocean by heating the water and using its steam to turn a turbine and make an electrical current. That is why I would choose geothermal energy.

  27. The energy source I think is the best is solar energy.I think solar energy is the best because it has less pollution than others.Solar energy also does not take anything from the Earth that the Earth needs.Which means it more eco-friendly.Solor energy is a renewable resource so you will never run out of it.You can put the panels anywhere as long as sun is able to hit it.It does not take a lot of space. The only downsides are it can be expensive and if the sun is not out it does not make energy. That is why I think solar energy is the best.

  28. If I was in charge of choosing the energy resource used by a city in the area, I would choose wind power. I would choose this resource because it doesn’t pollute the air, and it is a renewable resource. After the wind turbine is built and transported to its location, there is no pollution done to the earth when wind is converted to energy. Wind is a nonrenewable resource (because it is a natural cause). The city wouldn't need to pay for wind power because wind is free. Although wind is Eco friendly and renewable, if there is no wind in the area of a wind turbine, the generator can’t create energy. The area of a wind turbine must be windy to provide energy for the city. Because I love to keep the earth clean and pollution free, I would choose wind power for the energy resource in the city.

  29. I would use coal in Colorado because of its mountones reagan. Even though coal is polluting Colorado has the largest amount of coal then anywhere else witch works great in our favor. If we used coal we would only need a small amount and it will burn for a long time. Witch means coal is the perfect resource for Colorado. It doesn't take up a lot of space. Witch is why coal is the perfect recorce.

  30. I think we should use wind power. Here are the reasons why. Wind power is extremely eco friendly, this would help because it does not affect wildlife around, and it doesn’t affect us either. Wind power is pollutants free. This means that if we stop everything we are doing, shut down the factories, anything that does poolution and just use wind power this would help our Earth so much. No 6th grader has any idea of how much this would help our Earth. First it would help stop Global Warming. Global Warming happens because there is gas in the air, and gas contains atoms. When the sunlight passes through our ozone it will bounce off the Earth, through our ozone and back to space. Because we produce so much Gas, such as Carbon Dioxide, for an example, this creates a lot of gas, which means there will be more atoms in the air. When the sunlight tries to escape from the ozone back to space, most of it can’t, because the atoms from the gas in the air blocks the sunlight which makes it bounce back to Earth, and this process repeats too much which causes a lot of global warming. If we continue this process it will continue to damage our ozone which at one point will be destroyed completely. That is why we should never use any resources, like coal, for example as Blakeville’s resource or even for anywhere in the world. Another reason would be that it is renewable, because all we need for wind power is wind and wind is a natural thing that just comes naturally. A disadvantage of wind power is that on days without wind, we will not have any electricity. That is not a huge problem, all you need to do is plan the day before, look at the weather often, do anything you need to do so that you have it the next day. Also, it won’t kill you not to be on your phone for one day. This is why I think we should use wind power for our energy source.
